At 7:20 am on the 1st July 1916 a mine was blown under the Hawthorn Ridge, Beaumont Hamel, France. It was the signal for the start of the Battle of the Somme – Britain’s biggest military blunder of all time.

Join Sue in this online event for an educational insight into the first moments of the Battle of the Somme, when a section of the Hawthorn Ridge was blown up by the British to signal the beginning of the battle. Hear what both the British and Germans thought of it and their struggle over the Ridge.
